Government of India’s apprenticeship schemes

Did You Know?

You can boost your business performance and productivity by engaging apprentices under the Government of India’s apprenticeship schemes.

Apprenticeship is a system of training where you hire an apprentice and provide them with on-the-job training along with classroom instruction. It is a win-win situation for both you and the apprentice, as they get to learn and earn at the same time.

There are two major apprenticeship schemes in India – National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS). Both are initiated by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and are implemented by the Boards of Apprenticeship Training / Practical Training (BOAT/BPT) across the country.

NAPS is a scheme to promote apprenticeship training in the country by providing financial support to establishments undertaking the apprenticeship training. Under this scheme, you can get 25% of prescribed stipend subject to a maximum of Rs. 1500 per month per apprentice reimbursed by the Government of India. You can also get reimbursement of basic training cost up to Rs. 7500 per apprentice for a maximum duration of 500 hours. NAPS covers all categories of apprentices except the Graduate, Technician and Technician (Vocational) apprentices which are covered by NATS.

NATS is a scheme to provide one year apprenticeship training to Graduate, Technician and Technician (Vocational) apprentices under the Apprentices Act, 1961. Under this scheme, you can enhance the employability of fresh graduates and diploma holders by providing them industry exposure and practical skills. You can also pay stipend to the apprentices as per the prescribed rates.

By engaging apprentices under NAPS or NATS, you can enjoy several benefits, such as:

Access to a pool of skilled and trained manpower

Reduced cost of recruitment and training

Improved productivity and quality

Enhanced brand image and social responsibility

Compliance with statutory obligations under the Apprentices Act, 1961

If you are a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME) looking to boost your business performance and productivity, you can register on the online portals of NAPS (www.apprenticeshipindia.org) or NATS (www.mhrdnats.gov.in) and start engaging apprentices today. You can also contact your nearest BOAT/BPT for more information and guidance.

Apprenticeship is a proven way to bridge the skill gap and create a competent workforce for the future.

Don’t miss this opportunity to join the apprenticeship movement and reap its benefits.
